On the Edge of Summer...

May at The Farm with Ed Hackett, General Manager of Beach Plum Farm

“Instructions for living a life: Pay attention. Be astonished. Talk about it.”

One week the farm is quiet…cold soil, widely planted rows of summer crops, the last breath of winter still hanging on. Then something shifts. The light stretches. The wind softens, just a little. And suddenly, everything is moving. Fast. Real fast!

You see it first in the ground. Asparagus pushing through like it’s got somewhere to be. Radishes, baby carrots, pea shoots, lettuces, spinach, arugula…coming in steady now after daily waterings. The green houses are humming. Raised beds are turning over. Hands back in the dirt…. And yes! We’re still seeding. My favorite.

The chocolate mint, somehow, is finding its way back after a tough winter.  Not ready yet for iced tea but getting close.

Strawberries are SO close. You can see the small white flowers ready to go. And when they land, Sue’s shortcakes at the bakery won’t be far behind.  Strawberry madness is only weeks away!

Then you hear it and you cannot stop hearing it.

Birds. Everywhere.

Migration Is Here

May in Cape May doesn’t whisper…the volume is turned up a little. The sky fills quietly at night, wings moving over the breath-taking dunes beneath a soft, patient moon. Warblers, orioles, tanagers, hummingbirds—drifting in on the dark, settling into the hedgerows with the first light of morning. Some days, it feels as though the trees themselves are dancing in the morning sun.

Migration is here - We are hosting New Jersey Audubon May 17th, an experience shaped by the rhythm of the flight. Mornings spent in the preserves, the air still and full of song. Afternoons returning to the farm, where everything feels just a little more alive.

The birds come in waves. Some days are quiet, almost tender. Others feel impossible! Color, movement, and sound all at once.

And if you’re here for it, even briefly, you don’t just watch it…
you become part of it.

It’s a front-row seat to something ancient. Not staged. Not scheduled. Just happening, whether you’re paying attention or not.  It’s Happening.

A Flock Of Birds Flying Over Water

If you stay a few days at Beach Plum Farm, you start to fall into it. Crop walks in the morning with birds overhead. Walks through the marsh. Evenings when the light hangs a little longer than expected. Moonlight blankets the farm—and the occasional lightning storm—lighting the whole place up.  Sometimes the beauty does not feel real.

Dinner starts to feel different this time of year. Less about planning, more about reacting—with a lot of excitement.

The Garden Awakens Dinner Series runs Friday and Saturday nights through May…built entirely around what’s coming out of the ground that week. Everyone at the table. Long, communal, relaxed but still elegant.

On May 2nd, we host a special collaboration with Sickler's Circle View Farm—a dinner centered around responsibly raised New Jersey beef. A true farm-to-farm collaboration. No overworking the plate. Just letting great product do what it’s meant to do.

And then there are nights like the Flower Moon Dinner on May 31st—when the farm, the season, and the sky all line up. New friends are made, that second bottle of wine is opened, and the sounds of Ophelia fill the fields.

People Sitting At A Table

Back at the barns, things open up.

The Market shifts into full season, open daily starting in May, and the kitchen stretches into a longer rhythm, Wednesday through Sunday, 8:00 AM to 3:00 PM.

Mother’s Day weekend brings something a little different. Custom hampers filled with our favorite Beach Plum Farm goods—put together for the table, or wherever Mom wants to take them. If you can’t make it to the farm, the Market is open online.

The cottages explode with life in May.

Windows open. Screen doors slamming—everyone racing for the pool. Morning coffee surrounded by loved ones, with no rush to get out the door today. You wake up with the farm instead of driving in for it.

The pool opens early in the month. Bikes and golf carts are pulled out of storage. The property stretches a little further.

By Memorial Day, full beach service returns at Congress Hall—just a short ride away, but it feels like part of the same day.

A House With A Lawn Mower

It’s Cape May at its best—quiet, active, alive.

No tricks. No overthinking. “Keep some room in your heart for the unimaginable.”

Summer is coming.
