Horseshoe Crab Night Tours

CAPE MAY

Tours Available May & June

Set out on a guided Night Tour and witness one of the most incredible natural phenomena of our region: the Horseshoe Crab spawning season.

Every May and June the prehistoric horseshoe crabs crowd moonlight beaches to lay their eggs, as they have for nearly 500 million years. Older than dinosaurs and actually more closely related to spiders or scorpions than other members of the crab family, the largest population of Horseshoe Crabs is here along the Delaware Estuary. The females lay 100 tons of nutrient-rich eggs on the bay beaches during full moon high tides in May and June. On a Horseshoe Crab Night Tour, you'll set out after sunset with a Cape Resorts Guide to learn all about this incredible event and get an up-close look at this amazing natural occurrence that only happens right here.

Guided Tours available:

May 18th, 19th and 20th
June 17th, 18th, and 19th

Tours leave at 8:00pm from Congress Hall
$20 Adults, $10 Children
Limited Availability. Horseshoe Crab Night Tours are for Cape Resorts Guests only.

What to Expect

Before the walk starts, you’ll learn about the natural history of horseshoe crabs and their importance to our Ecosystem. The walk will take place on the beach along the waterline. Our walk will cover 1 km of beach (walked in both directions, so 2 km of walking) and will take approximately 2 hours start to finish.

Guests should be prepared with:

  • Weather-appropriate clothing
  • Closed-toed shoes or knee boots that can get wet (no flip flops!)
  • A flashlight or headlamp
  • Bug repellant

Birding

CAPE MAY

Grab your binoculars and set out into the scenic spaces of Cape May, named by National Geographic as one of the top birding destinations in the world.

Each year, Cape May plays host to thousands of migratory shore birds who visit the area for food made possible by the region's unique ecosystem. The birds fly a miraculous 10,000 miles from their breeding ground in the Arctic and arrive at the Delaware Bay after a 250-mile flight from South America, feasting on horseshoe crab eggs and other natural morsels provided by the land.

This phenomena was recently detailed by National Geographic: "The narrow peninsula at Cape May acts as a bird funnel, bringing in songbirds during their spring and fall migrations. At dawn on a good day, legendary Higbee Beach offers front-row seats to a feathered fashion show: A steady procession flies by, each bird intent on finding a place to rest as it encounters the natural barrier of Delaware Bay. With a little luck, you can see 20 species of warblers, each in its own colorful costume."

Witness this incredible natural occurrence on a self-guided Cape May Birding excursion.
