From 1908–1940, Sears, Roebuck and Co. sold about 70,000 – 75,000 homes through their mail-order Modern Homes program. These homes came with all of the materials and instructions necessary for construction. Buyers would place custom orders, with options to choose everything from kitchen cabinet colors to variations in the floor plan. The Winona, was a popular model between 1927 and 1932. This Sears Cottage was constructed in West Cape May around that time, and brought back to life this year as a Beach Plum Farm Cottage.

A side door provides an entrance to the first floor, where you’ll find a spacious, inviting living room game table and wet bar. A master bedroom and bathroom are also on the first floor with access to a washer and dryer.

The second floor may be reached inside through a set of stairs, or from the front door on the breezy and relaxing screened -in porch. Through the dining room is the fully equipped kitchen.

Kids will love having their own space in a bedroom with two twin beds, while parents will appreciate the privacy of a master bedroom with en suite bathroom. The second floor is also home to an additional bathroom with a small bathtub.

The walls of The Winona Cottage are adorned with the history of this home’s past: beginning as parts shipped from the pages of a catalogue, to becoming a home to today’s visitors in Cape May.

Some of the first settlers in Cape May came from New England and were the direct descendants of Pilgrims that landed in Plymouth, MA in 1640. Many migrated south in the 17th century to pursue a life in the growing Whaling industry. The settlers that came to Cape May at this time built timber-framed houses, as opposed to log cabins, carefully crafted with a strength and fortitude that stands the test of time.

On the first floor, you’ll find two seating areas, with comfortable furniture. In the living room, exposed beams give a warm, authentic feel. The focal point of the room is the 1750s fireplace. The first floor is also home to a full kitchen with modern appliances, which is open to the eating area with plenty of seating: enough for up to eight guests. Here you’ll also find a cozy master bedroom with en-suite bathroom. The master bedroom comes complete with a wood burning stove and coffee bar.

Climb the original small colonial staircase to the second floor, where there’s a bedroom with two twin beds. Upstairs a second master bedroom includes an en-suite bathroom, providing a welcome escape from the rest of the cottage.

The Whaler’s Cottage is full of the warmth and comforts of home.

In 2015 the newest crop to pop up from the fields of Beach Plum Farm was the Farm Market and Kitchen, housed in a beautifully constructed barn built by members of the Amish community from Lancaster, PA. Two new barns have been added, this time providing a home for visitors looking for a place to relax surrounded by natural beauty.

The new barns at Beach Plum Farm are timber-raised; the frame is made out of Hemlock fir trees and cut to fit together using mortise and tenon joinery. Essentially, this means that the wood is carefully fitted and held together using wooden pegs. Not a single nail is used to build these amazing structures!

Stepping into the first floor, you’ll notice the natural wooden walls, warm carpets, and plush furniture. Sink into the couch and put a log on the fire-the living room comes complete with a wood burning stove. As the sun rises grab a cup of coffee from the kitchen and step out into the enclosed outdoor living space to enjoy a quiet morning. The first floor is also home to a master bedroom with en suite bathroom. During the winter months this room may be rented separately. It even comes with its very own private enclosed outdoor living area as well.

Upstairs you’ll find two more bedrooms- one with a king bed and the other with twin beds. Kids will feel like they are away at camp in this fun space; ideal for telling scary stories by flashlight (electricity is of course available in every room, but flashlights are much more fun). Parents will enjoy the beautiful second story view of Beach Plum Farm. The second floor also has a full bathroom that may be accessed from the hallway.

The barns are furnished with classic, all-American pieces that hearken back to a simple time. These buildings are works of art in their own right, made even better by the countless memories that will be made within the strong wooden walls.

The Plum Barn is full of rustic accents, restored into a charming cottage that links the past and present. A kitchen full of modern amenities is open to the living area, where you can relax watching TV or catching up with family and friends. Off of the kitchen, an enclosed porch allows for additional seating and dining space, with plenty of natural light.

A master bedroom with en-suite bathroom is also located on the first floor. In the bedroom, you’ll find a gas and wood burning stove, perfect for cooler evenings on the farm.

Head up to the second floor, where there’s additional sleeping space: a bedroom with two twin beds and a second bathroom. There’s also a second Master Bedroom with en-suite bathroom on this floor. Throughout the whole home, a sense of tradition and comfort is evident in the farmhouse design and cozy, whimsical touches.
